Russell & Rice altered

I got the good fortune of digging through some of Dennys pictures this summer and heard some killer stories as always. This picture is when they just finished the altered, 1964ish. My dad and the gorilla lives dad, I think helped with the building of this car. Had a 327 hilborn, with a mag, clutchflite tranny. The new wrinkle wall slicks he assumed 15 lbs would work. He blew the tires off instantly, decided to drop 2 lbs, same thing, 2 pounds again, same thing. Not even 3 feet out and the tires fail. Well next round is eleminations and he knows his day is finished.

The Mongoose is pitted across from him and he sees Toms tires are really wrinkled. So he walks over and says, Tom what air pressure you running in those? Tom says 5 1/2 pounds, Denyy says damn and thats how you run that thing. Tom said yep thats where those tires really work best at. Well he dropped down to 5 1/2 pounds, he forgot to put the wheelie bars on as he never thought about really needing them the way the car was working. This picture was the first 5 1/2 pound mongoose advised run. He carried the wheels for about 300 feet, won the run, dried his pants out, then put the wheelie bars on.

Live everyday like it were your last, because someday it will be.
