My 396 SBC ,has prob.

Thinking some body on here might be able to help me? The crate mtr that I had built for my 56,has some issues. I think its all about the Carb? Maybe. Timing is 45 degrees, vac advance works good, carb jets arnt responsive to adjustment. Sprayed and use smoke machine looking for vac leaks? It will cough up threw carb when you hit throttle,,  It doesnt lke to run smooth at all, unless your up over 3000 rpm. I use 3rd gear much of the time,as its got like 300 gears.. Its had this prob ,since the get go,was running rich, and jetted down to 65,s in the primarys. Its a Holly wanna be style (wet) carb, vac sec,s 750.. . It ran good in the dyno video.. All that was done after recept of the mtr was removing the carb.. for plate mount ,to hook to cherry picker. Havent brought this up,as I figure no biggy,I,ll fix it when I get the other things done. Well, Havent removed the carb yet, Fuel sight for primary are perfect..Got the chocke (elect) adj open. ,, Has elect pump, running about 5 psi..Any one have any ideas,The coughing up threw carb should be a hint. But dang if I know?? Thx for any suggestions..

Sounds like carb adjustments are needed.

If it ran good on dyno and the only thing you did was change carb then it must be the carb. What about air bleeds could one be plugged

I found out the Dyno run and break in U-tube vid ,used a diff carb. Its a WET carb, a Holley knock off. I have used them and Proform before, expenzive carbs and always worked well. But thinking Im gonna have to change it out next spring. Yikes.

The good news is, the carb mfg ,told me yesterday, that to send the carb back to them, they would fix it,and retune it for my mtr. Saves me a bunch,as I was gonna get a Holley.

YES!! The company name is QUICK FUEL TECHNOLIGIES ....They build this line of carbs. Mine is the SLAYER.. They also build the line of PROFORM,, which I have used. Had an 850 Proform in my 62 Chevy drag car. awesome carb. I called Skip White Industries ,the co in TNN that built my mtr, they told me to go to the carb mfgr, and if I had a prob, give them his name, and he said if they gave me any static,to send it back to them and they would get it done. The mtr still has a 1 1/2 yr warranty. I was looking in Jegs and Summitt at new Holleys. decided to find out if I could get it done free LOL

Just got an 850 for my sbc 396 haven't had a chance to run it other than idle but it seems like a good carb. Billet metering blocks and adjustable air bleeds, the 750 holley I was using I had to drill them out after much frustration.

Sounds like the one I had. All I had to do was ,some std tunning, power valves and jets. Changed jets a lot,as I was tunning for max perf.
