engine for the 38

we got a new engine for the ol 38 but its a bit wild for a street car. we could use it as is but it dont wake up till around 3500-4000. its an 8k winder. i cant get the specs on it cause the builder passed away. he built these engines for many yearts and has a great rep.  i feel like we should calm er down a bit for the street. course i aint no engine builder and could use a little advice on thisun. its runnin on methanol now but id like to run it on gas. he did tell me these little engines have bettern 600 hp. we got a new built narrowed 9in and a 400 to go with it. thinkin micky streets on the back. i kinda hate to chop the ol truck up but my buddy wants it done and its an easy one to do. ive got that s10 frame under my chevy II wagon but it needs a lot of mods to sute the build so im gona build its frame and see how the s10 frame works out for the ol 38. heck, soon as we get this dirt track stuff outa here im bringin in t5he projects. we're addin 32 ft to the shop real soon.the ol harley will be here soon. its done old school. pics soon folks. just a bit busy rite now.

Running on methanol leads me to think its very high compression. It may not like pump gas like you said.

My thoughts also!  But I'd have to run some race gas at least once just to see how it drives!biggrinbiggrinbiggrin

Methanol can be anywhere from 12.1 and up. if its a dirt car IMCA motor it will probably have aftermarket cast iron heads and a cam with lift in to the 700's. you could probably drop the compression with new pistons I would hate to change the heads and would try something else first. Geezer check the location of those  freeze plugs it might  be a sbc 400 and turned into a 406

My car is 11:1 with aluminum heads and I can't run 93 with out it pinging. But with good 93 and some octain booster its alright.
When I can get some 104 gas for it that when it runs best.

You could install a thick set of head gaskets, and have a cam built with the overlap and duration reqd to drop a bunch of compression,so with both ,might help. Carb prob needs rejetted,as alky reqs large jets. Theres some things ya can do that might help.?
