283 hp questions

whats a good head i can put on this or how much lift can the stockers handle? not looking for masive cam just thinking. I have a eddy performer intake and 600cfm carb along with an hei might try to get some headers found some at summit for $60 and it has a single exhaust so we change that right off the bat. If I could get a 700r4 that would be sweet but to much $$ right now.

the best bet would be set of 416 or 601 heads cleaned up they flow pretty good for smaller displacement motors.
or you could go with a set of 113 aluminum versions.
or you can go the vortec way.new intake is needed though. the 059 have the 58cc chambers but the 1.84 valves and the 062 and 906 have the 1.94 but have a 64cc chambers but a quick .030 mill puts them at 59cc i heard of 305 guys using them b4.
as for stock lift i had a xe 268 in a 416 head with the matching springs . but no head work.
i did not beat the snot out of it but i did tear it up some.

I bought my very first 700r4 used from a mechanic with a guarantee for 300 bucks. It lasted for about a year behind my 283 with a 268 voodoo cam and 410 gears. Maybe another option

Whats your intended use of this car rjsbu ? A lot of highway miles, in town driving/crusing, and is it for the rod in your avatar ?

iirc the 283hp 283 had power pack heads a special cam(not sure on the specs) and 2 carbs and dual exhaust.
its nothing special really.
get a good intake and a 600-650 carb deasent cam and some headers on there and you should be better then the 283hp was.

iirc the power pack heads are just a small valve small chamber double hump. not a bad head but now will all the choices in sbc heads.you can do better

oh and as for transmissions plaese take a 700r4 over a 200r4 you will not regrete it.the 200r4 sucks.

but the 700r4 will need some upgrading to stay alive.but they don't really need anything exotic. look at corvette parts for a good street motor.(anything below 300hp)

Ya run as fast as you can away from the 200r4 tranny, if you have to have overdrive then the 700r4 is the way to go. But they are pricey by the time you add a decent converter, versus a simple TH350. They ran those 283 motors for years with the TH 350 and the 2 speed glides on the highway with no problems at all. They are a tough motor and you can rev them til they melt too.

I put water in the radiator today and fired that little motor up. After it started fireing on all cylinders it ran pretty good let it run for about 20 minutes. I would like to run some kind of detergent threw it was thinking of seafoam , anyone have any ideas I dont want to wash out the bearings.

I would not worry about the detergent, change the oil and call it a day. Depending on what that detergent knocks lose it could plug the oil pump, then you have a big problem. If it aint broke dont fix it. That motors been around since the 60,s and its done fine so far, it just needs to be ran for what it is.
