1970 Ford Maverick Pro Stock campaigned by “Dyno Don”


After a spectacular season of heads-up racing in Super Stock, in late 1969 the NHRA announced the new no-handicap Pro Stock class for the 1970 season. Super Stock racers flocked to the new class, including veteran racer-tuner “Dyno Don” Nicholson, who built this famous 427 SOHC-powered 1970 Ford Maverick. Nicholson constructed the car in seven days for its season debut at the NHRA Winternationals in February 1970. The car became a dominant force on the match racing circuit, at one point winning 45 straight rounds. Nicholson's Maverick later made drag racing history, becoming the first Ford to win an NHRA Pro Stock title at the 1971 Summernationals at Raceway Park in Englishtown, NJ.

Nicholson retired the Maverick after the 1971 season. It remained in excellent condition through three caring owners until it was purchased in 2004 by Ford collector Wayne Jeffers, who showed the car for several years. Today the Dyno Don Pro Stock Maverick still remains almost completely original, from its bright Candy Apple Red, Orange and White “Mr. Gasket” livery right down to the track grime on the undercarriage, with only minor modifications to keep it legal for strip use. The exceptionally rare 427 Cammer engine, built by Nicholson's crew chief Earl Wade and maintained to Pro Stock specification, received a complete service in the summer of 2011 and is in good running condition.
