Training for baseball again

Well I played senior baseball this year. 50 and older.  At 69 I'm a bit worn out.  I actually got caught a bit out of shape so I really did not play at potential.  i was really disappointed at that.

So for the coming year I've embarked on a training program just for baseball similat to what i did in the younger years.

Nothing like long toss to build the throwing arm. You can do this by yourself with a small net.  Just pace off distance and begin throwing a group of 20 balls. I also have softballs that are harder to throw very far.  I do sets of 20 since that's the ball count int he bag.  then I drop back 5 steps.  I keep track of distance roughly by paces.  When it is cold out it is much harder to get warmed up and stay warm.  I think by late summer I will be up to what the other guys can throw.  Nobody can throw the ball out of the park anymore like we used to but at least i will be able to make it in from the outfield and rifle (haha) shots from 2nd base.

Interestingly I was able to still play 2nd base.  I'm not as fast by a long ways but neither are the other guys.  I had a 100 % error free season so I felt pretty good.

Hitting is another area that I'm working on.  I try to hit the cages once a week for 100 hits.  mainly make good solid contact and stay off the handle.  We play with wood bats so cost wise it is good to keep from breaking expensive bats.  By this age the fast twitch muscles are gone completely so getting good baqt speed is pretty hard. Everything needs to be well coordinated to get good wood on the ball.  Even so hitting 300 feet is pretty tough.  The pitching is nolonger 70-80 mph but more like 50 on a good day so you just can't hit the ball as far.

I never thought I'd be able to play anymore. My last playing was at 62 with the 35 and older and I was just barely able to play with them.

I don't have anyone yet to practice with so I have to develope my own training.  I have a exercise room to use so I work on the strength and conditioning there too.

Running is just a problem. I hate running so I have to really force myself to do wind sprints.  Hit and run to 1st for e.t was one test we did this year. I really sucked. 6.2.  My goal is to run 5's.  If our funnycars can run 5's then I need to run 5's in this test. haha.  I finished with a 5.9 but I have to do better.  I actually stole a few bases however.

I don't know if I should post the groin pull pictures.  They are really bad.  My car is dark cherry pearl metalic and the bruise was even darker for 1/2 of my leg. no

Our league all star guys won the national tournament in Florida right after ThanksGiving so that's the quality of guys I play with.

Well I need to hit the gym for a few minutes.

That is really Cool to hear you still enjoy a work out . I go to the YMCA three Times a week Lately just for a 50 Min Swim . Not to Long ago I use to hit the Weights hard on the second floor . Pound for Pound I was unmatched Ha-Ha . As I get older I can see how My Knees and most of the Guys working out 40+ knees can't take Lots of jumping . The Best work out for Me to get the Heart Lungs and Knees stronger has been swimming . I do 20 Laps then Walk through the Water forward and backwards . Then do 10 Min of water weights . You might think about this work out to ready yourself for the Baseball . What I do enjoy is doing laps next to an 89 and 83 Year old and they can really move

Funny thing about swimming. I was on competitive swimming teams all the way to soph in college.  I got to a point where I just didn't like the water anymore.  It's really good exercise but I don't have a pool except in the summer.  Even then it is pretty hard to do any kind of laps as there are always kids there.  Even at midnight. I do sort of miss the pool though.

Sure would like a hot pool however.  I used to do lots of kick excercise in the ot pool. Nice way to trim some weight off too.  You really sweat.
