removing a catalytic convertor

can someone tell me if this will hurt or help? This little 98 Ranger i got (2.5 liter) has been getting crapy mileage it has a 16 gallon tank and i would think i could get atleast 300 miles out of it but 280 is about max. Took it to a muffler shop they put a tester for heat i think and said it wasnt working, probably getting plugged. If i remove it will the computer go haywire or will it matter?

No the Cat converter on that truck should be after the O2 Sensors . So it kinda catches the Last of the un-burned Fuel so it will only run better with out it and much cheaper to buy a straight piece of Pipe then a new Cat . But I am sure it's an off road use Truck no EPA Testing so you can remove it then .

I know that set up it's not a cheap Pipe to buy with the double cats . Most Likely one of the cats are broken up inside plugging it up . Sure a good welder could cut them off and section in some bent pipe kinda Like a Hi Pro pipe . It you removed that pipe . I would price a New pipe assembly first . If it's real costly I know what I would do .

i took it off the mustang but it didnt have a sensor . just replaced it with a piece of pipe. they dont look for it on cars that old.just check all the lights, wipers and brakes.lucky for me.

i can get the cat from autozone $60 and cut it out to replace it there's enough room between cats to do this, but was thinking just taking a concrete stake couse thats what i have and knocking the guts out of the old one. but after the last feasco with that dakota im kinda gun shy about messing with the computer stuff

But I thought you said it had two cats . I have knocked the beehive out of them before . Always just a Bit left that you cant get . Later it Finds it's way into the Muffler and rattles Like Crazy .

it does have 2 cats, a precat that is about 6" then a regular cat about 14-16" long thats the one thats bad the big one. the little precat is getting hot the big one isnt so thats why i thought just nock the inside out but I think its going to be easier to just spend the $60 bucks and put a new one on

Are they welded or Bolted on ? And are they on the same pipe ? You can Lightly rap on the side of them to hear the one that's broken inside . The one getting Hotter might be the blocked up one .

they are welded in and there is enough room between the 2 for a repair. the exhaust shop said that the 1 not getting hot was the problem but dont trust to many shops. took a piece of pipe banged on the side couldnt hear anything

You can hear it better when you Lightly rap on them with a Gloved hand . My Friend had a Muffler that was full of water his car ran fine for two blocks when cold then would barely run . It had 4 Cats they were ok . We replaced his Muffler with a more free Flow Type and it ran real good again .
