Left over Parts 5.7 350 Max H.P Build .

I had plans to build this Engine as a Roller Camshaft build . But even the Budget Roller Camshaft / Lifters are not so cheap and I don't want to do a rebuild on this Engine . Also I have a Lot of parts that are sitting some new stuff and some used parts . I am going to throw this Engine together with a Lot of mix matched parts for as cheap and Fast as I can with Max H.P as part of the plan . Yeah a run what ya have hope is runs ok Engine / that won't work why-did ya do that Build Ha-biggrin

1989 5.7 350 one Piece seal 2 Bolt main out my short Bed Truck . Ran so-so no oil burning or Knocks .

Disclaimer on this Build there will be a Lot of things done to this Engine that I in Fact do not recommend . In all Likelihood this Engine will run fine . But many of the Budget Minded Short cuts can and or will effect Performance and Longevity of this Engine . SBC Tango

Here are the Photos I took Yeah some do and don'ts . The Deck on that Block was not easy to clean up . I am Glad I did not spend the Extra Money on the Roller Cam Ha-Ha . I had a Set of used Vortec Head Bolts so I wire wheeled them and used them . Yes it's always better to use New Head Bolts but that would cost more money ? Also I took a Picture of the #1 Piston at TDC as you can see it's not as far down Like a Lot of Guys say it is who Like to Do Hot Rod Math . I also took a Used HV Oil Pump apart checked it good and Re-assembled it that Joker sounds good when you turn it . I will use it But I need to drive the Pick up tube in a Little more once I set the height .

Now sure I have to buy a Few things I had the Head Gaskets but Needed intake one Piece oil Pan Gasket and Timing Cover also Valve cover gaskets . You would Think buy a Complete Gasket set . No it was more money and this 5.7 you have to use the one Piece Pan seal just Like G.M made them . I did some pricing around I was trying to buy as much made in the USA Stuff that I could find. Check this out O'Reilly auto had every Gasket for about $1.50-$2.00 Less then Summit or Jegs and I am Talking in the same Fel-Pro Brand and part# . They Even stock the melling Hardened Oil Pump shaft and also for cheaper . So remember many times the parts you need are near by and for Less . Now not everything was that case . I had to buy a Set of Lifters and a Set of Stamped Rockers from Summit both made in the USA But not high end cost parts . I do have a set of used Proform Roller Rockers that I could use I paid $50.00 for them the Stock Type were $42.00 and the Lifters $51.00 . If I use the Roller Rockers Folk will say yeah that's why that Engine runs Like that Ha-Ha . As For Push Rods I have a Set that I bought off a Guy with a 3rd Gen Firebird 383 . They are good ones I had to replace two of the set . I also bought a used oil Pump Drive from him . But it's a Bit marked up so I did not use it  .

Well if it had more Compression it would do better this ones right about 8.5.1 them 882 Heads look to be milled some . I am Looking at the two Flat Tappet camshaft's that I do have now . Both are a bit off for this build . The one that would pull the better H.P#s is really a bit to much Lift on the Exhaust side . With not knowing were My valve spring pressure is at . And have pressed in rocker studs it's one of the don't does of this build . Now with all that B.S said and if the Valve springs don't Float or the Rocker studs pull up it will make 335 H.P @ 5200 and about 400Lbs @ 3500 . The only thing that could turn it off at Less then 5200 is if the Valve springs are not up for the task . I did the old swap meet Test of stepping on one with my shoe heel to see were it just opens . Ha-Ha that's another Don't do type of Test they seem to be stronger then stock Ha-biggrin If it will pull more then 5200 RPM's and with the Porting done to them Heads and with the intake and carb I have and set up Dist . It will pull even a Little more Power .

This Engine is Kinda COOL Because it can run on the Cheapest Gas in Town and pull about 340 H.P to 5400 Ha-Ha Have to find a Cheap car to drop it in to keep the Budget build going .

See that Camshaft was sitting around and the Intake I have was also in My stock Ha-Ha but both will turn on at about 2400 RPM's so I have to Find something with at Least a 3.08 Gear even then it's to small but I can run a Budget 2500 stall that should get it to just dead pull from the Line with no tire spin . And on the Road that joker will pull real good . A mid 70's Nova 4-Door would be just right ?

As for new Parts ? about $200.00 Bucks I bought that Camshaft a Long Time ago on Sale and The Rocker Arms where not to Expensive but If I had a set of good stock ones I could have save some money . But stock Rockers that are not Long Slotted can fail with the Lift I am running on the Exhaust side . If I had picked a Camshaft and intake for this Engine . It would not be that same stuff I am using now . I just want to make use of the Parts I have . As for the Intake . Going with a used Edelbrock Torker 1 and a Holley 3310-2 750 CFM V/S that I bought used and rebuilt . But for the First Fire and Camshaft Break in . I most Likely will use My Trusted 575CFM Carter AFB that's of a 1965 327 Corvette .

I picked up some stuff at advance Auto Parts this Morning . I had a Few Coupons $1.99 a Quart for there Brand of oil that Shell makes . Has Lots of Certification on the Back . Not my First choice for oil but not bad oil either . I bought one case .

Then I used My second Coupon for a Accel Dist Cap and Rotor kit . I got $10.00 off cost $17.00 it has the Brass terminals . I rebuilt that HEI some time back and re-worked the advance curve .

Well I got up early today . But still ended up starting Later then I wanted to . Like always the hardest part of building a Budget Engine is straightening and cleaning all the parts . I use a small hammer and a Piece of I Beam I have . Then some wire wheeling as needed . Then a Wash in Cleaning Fluid or Gas ( No Wire Brushes or scrappers when washing the parts = No sparks ) And use Gloves ' Then I spray the Parts down with Brake Clean . Now I can Paint them . I can say this it sure is Nice having that Cheap Chrome Tin ready to bolt on vs Clean this old G.M Tin no

Ok right about there I was about ready to go back inside clean Myself up and take a Nap . But I knew the funner part of the Build was next . Well Kinda I started to adjust the Valves and did a bit more checking on My Camshaft Timing and decided to pull that Timing Set off and Buy a New one . It's still a Cloyes Double Roller but not a True Roller #C3023K O'Reilly Auto Parts stock them for $22.99 not a bad price and it fit perfectly . After that most everything went well .

With the Timing Chain marks Lined up I set the Timing Cover on and check to see if My balancer was ok and not spun on the Rubber . Looks Good

Bolted one the Timing Cover and installed the Balancer .

To save some money on a new set of small head intake bolts . I used some Long Header Bolts for the 4 inside mounting bolts . This is what we did a Long time ago when they did not make all them Cool Bolts they do today .

I set the oil pan on for now . But I have to install the HV Oil Pump and set the Pick up tube . That won't take Long . I planed to have it bolted on the Test stand by now even found my Flex Plate . But the weather changed to rain . I was thinking about going out there now . With my Luck with weather it will start to poor Rain . I don't Like having Engines open in that kinda weather . Heck I could drop it into that car in the Back Ground when I am going back over that 355 or the Truck but I will have to drill out that one Head ? Bet I could take on a Lot more Honda's then biggrin
