MR Pontiac

Pontiac racing legend Arnie “The Farmer” Beswick, a great guy who made a pretty recent comeback from some scary burns and is still running a very serious machine at age 70-plus, and then some. It’s not a pure muscle car, but Arnie’s current Tameless Tiger, a mountain motor Pro Modified with 1964 Pontiac GTO bodywork, certainly looks the part.

We caught up with Arnie and hung out for a bit during the Ames Performance Pontiac Nationals in Norwalk, Ohio. I grabbed this shot of Arnie on one of his exhibition passes, the monster big-block belching fire as he grabs another Lenco lever. Every pass, even in extreme heat and sopping humidity, was in the consistent 7.20/192 range. How long has Arnie been doing this? Long enough to have taken a class win at the first NHRA Nationals at Great Bend, Kansas, in 1955, and to have hauled down from Illinois and run the first NHRA-NASCAR Winternationals at Daytona Beach in 1960. Great guy. Summit Motorsports Park in Norwalk, also, is a fantastic place to watch a drag race.
