15 minutes to check an engine's health, can it be done?

Well, not total health like bearings but valve seating and rings, yes in about 15 minutes. Say you don't have time to check compression for every jug. Start the engine and use an insulated spark plug boot puller (so you don't get bit) and at idle start pulling one plug wire at a time. Any plug lead pulled that seemed to have little or no effect on idle smoothness, note that cylinder number and finish pulling one at a time. Now, whatever plug cable pulls had the least effect, pull those plugs and perform a compression test on those cylinders. Note your first reading, then squirt oil into the cylinder through the plug opening and test again. If the reading doesn't change, bad valve sealing, if the pressure comes up, bad or broken rings.

Years ago when doing a Full Tune up most guy also did a compression Test as well . Today this Test seems to be so over Looked when trouble shooting an Engine . When it should be one of the First Tests it ends up to be the Last Thing done only after Lot$ of parts are thrown at a Engine that may really need a Valve Job . As for Pulling Plug wires at work we have a Tester that cuts out cylinders one at a Time . You want to block the acc pedal High Idle and watch the RPM Drop if you don't get a Good RPM Drop on a Cylinder it notes that as a Weak Cylinder . Now if you do a Manual compression test on that Cylinder and say it shows good Compression no (Internal Mechanical Problems) Then the Ign and or injector of that Cylinder needs to be checked . On the Diesels the Cut out Test is done by shutting down the injectors one at a time .

I'll do it again about 5000 miles after a rebuild, just to check if all rings and valves are seating OK.
