400 pontiac build

im looking at the option of building a mild 400 pontiac up for my 1960 gmc truck, i think it would be cool as heck and definatley different.

i was thinking

400-.030 over

alluminum dual plane with a nice rebuilt q-jet, hei

10:1-or 10:5-1 nice cam, headers, mild ported heads,

a nice torqey build that wont have to work itself to death moving that big old truck around

Heck that Joker will be a Step up from Mild . I would go down on the squeeze some maybe 9.1 -9.25.1 . Do a Bit of Port matching to a set of 6X Heads . See if you can Find a 1967-72 PMD Iron Non-EGR Q-Jet Intake and Q-Jet . Run a re-curved HEI . Camshaft under 460" Lift they Like a Bit more Duration then SB Chevy in the same cubes . You build it right it might not be so bad on Fuel MPG . Them 400 + Pontiac's that I have owned would Drink some Fuel nod.gif

And it will have some to . Them 400 Pontiac's will out Torque any 383 sbc and even most 400 sbc's . Hey even a 389 Pontiac is not a bad Engine to Build .

You are right about the Cost for a good 389 . Bad thing about them 389's is they have one set of Motor Mount boss / Holes . and the Heads really were not so good . They are Called Bath Tub Chamber Heads and they had small valves with no Screw in studs or Guide Plates .

But Right out the Box them 389 4bbl Engines had 335 H.P 10.5.1 C/R in the Big Car's . A bit more in the GTO's . With a Better set of Heads Like 1967 #670 Heads with Larger Valves and Better Ports the H.P would improve .

I help a Friend build a 326 once but he went and ordered all the Parts first and could not return the stuff . He had a 480" Lift 288 Dur Camshaft and A 750 Carb ran his Points Dist curved the Best I could Get it with some Open Headers . It was in a 1967 Le Mans had a Power Glide Trans 3.08 open diff . Bad set up alright . At a 30 MPH Roll if you dropped it down in Low You could Rew it way over 6000 Grand even Beat a Early Monte Carlo with a Built 402 Ha-Ha at a Rolling Punch . But man did we Bend some Push Rods in that Joker . Finally that 326 had Enough and started Knocking .

Them Pontiac 350's are Like the Red Headed Step Child to Most Pontiac Guy's . Small Bore Long Stroke they are Kind of Torque-y . But not as much as you would think they would be . And hard to yank much H.P above 320 . If you really wanted to build one of them best to go with a 1968-70 350 core with Higher Compression Heads on it . I can get a 1968 350 for a $100.00 Bucks from a Guy the Next block over ? With gas over $4.00 Bucks a Gal It Real is Best to re-Think all them 350 and Smaller Engine Builds nod.gif

I would Like to Run a 1965-66 389 or 421 in My Monte Carlo just to see how it would Run . I would run it near Stock with a Camshaft Up-Grade better Oil Pump maybe Some H.O Exhaust Manifolds . I do keep an Eye open for them Engines .

Not the Greatest Cylinder Heads on them and they had some Bad Fiber Timing Gears from The Factory . But they made good Power . Lots of Hot Rod way Back used Pontiac Engines .

421 S.D Yes with Dual Quads . But not a Lot of them around . I did Know a Guy that Had a 1966 G.P with a Factory 421 Tri-Power . I think it was Rated at 376 H.P something High Like that 10.75.1 . They Pinged a Lot even with High Test Fuel .

G.P were Like Big GTO's or Executive Performance Pontiac . Even there 400's were not to much Different then The GTO 400's . And some 1967-69 G.P's had 428's . Then in 70's on you could get 455 G.P's
