Race buddys are awesome and another great reason to run SBC. I raced a hobby stock roundy round and we would all chip in like that, even to help a guy get going that might trounce you on the track.
I did learn to use a 6 banger Ford for a tow truck though. If you had a chevy p/u, half your parts would be on the track by the end of the weekend and you'd have to put it back together to get home. I even saw one guy pull the engine from his chevy tow vehicle and put it in his race car at a 2 day race.

Even if you slap together a 350 just for one season . You can have some fun running it . Them bored out 283's really do run well and can turn some High RPM's and still Live on to do it again . But try out a 350ci or Bigger SB Chevy and see if you don't Like it better . Most of the track's out here are far to drive to . To many Techs making up more Rules then NHRA already has . Back in the day I would drive out to the Track 50 Miles one way . Come right off the Highway just a quick inspection and Line up for some all out grudge Racing . Now your Lucky to find a Day or Time at the Track that you can even Run Time only ? I will get one of the Plug it into your Lighter E.T Readers and Make some Passes on the Street nod.gif

well tonight after im done giving this 2.8 s-10 a valve adjustment i will assembly that 355 into a complete motor and wed i will go get the nova haul it over here and drop it in and make some noise. one thing i remembered on my carb is that with the 302 i needed to go up 2 jet sizes i think with this 355 i will go 3 or 4 to be safe

Go over your Float Height and Fuel Pressure before you jet up that much .

floats were dead on and fuel psi at 7.5 the 302 was just a tad lean. it would do that surging when going slow like it was leaning out. so i know the 355 will need at least 2 jet sizes more in fuel

What C/R you think it will be 12.1 ? That camshaft will work well not over cam-ed but Large enough to get max Power with your Hump Heads .

with 64cc heads they were 13:1 my heads are 62cc haha so yes alot. the 302 was a true 13:1

the 302 ran 40* of total timing on trick 114 fuel

this 355 i was told it ran best at 34-36total on 114

this time the combo is more matched, last time i had an intake that fell on its nose at 6800  now this bad boy will run good.

when i had the edelbrock rpm air gap on the 302 it ran 13.40's i changed the oil and put my buddies super victor on there, it ran 12.80 off the trailer haha.

the 302 would of ran 12.00-12.20's on slicks its run 12.50's before, also when your cutting 2.0-2.4 60ft times that dont help. thank god for slicks now so if this 355 dont hit 11's i will be dissapointed and put my 302 back in haha. i do have slicks now though

Just take your time assembling it . Making sure that's done right is the Last step in being a winner over the guy in the Lane next to you . get them valves set dead on the first time you button it up . make two passes all out . Then pull off the track and read a plug to see how it's burning . No guess work . Pull timing in and out and read the E.T Slip track dyno that car . I am good at this stuff but don't Like hanging out at the track the way it has changed today . I am sure I could get your car running so well you will stop Looking for replacement cars nod.gif

I dont think you will have a problem running into the 11,s, from what your saying.. The 383,s I used to run,all liked 34 degrees.  My 350,s long ago liked 36 degrees.  Also depends on your heat range of your plug. SBC ,s like to run a little lean, just their nature I guess. Hope ya can take some vids of that bad boy running.
