Low Dollar 5.7 SBC Roller take out build

This 5.7 SB Chevy Roller one Piece seal that's on it's way out of my 1989 Chevy Truck is more or Less a Cash for Clunkers survivor or Like a running Junk Yard Engine . No Knocks or Lifter Noise . But it can Kill some Bugs on it's Smokey Start up-s Due to worn out Valve Guides and Seals . Ok First I have to get my Truck up and Running with it's New Used Engine . But then as I have said in the Past and haven't done yet ? I am going to build this Engine as cheap as I can with Lots of used take off parts and see how it runs biggrin This one won't be pretty . When it's do it will spend some Time on my Test Stand .

Ok that Engine is out . Now keep this in Mind this is a 1989 Chevy Truck Engine . The 5.7 is Right on the Rear Lt side of the Block . So by rights it should have a one Piece rear oil seal yes it does . And a hyd Roller camshaft and 4-bolt Main Bearing caps right ?

This engine is a good example of how G.M got cheap in the 80's . All of the top end parts are going to the Metal Man . I plan to slap it together as cheap as I can . And it will still make near 350 H.P and run on Low Octane Fuel nod.gif

this should be a nice cheap runner. are you going to try and do an OEM roller cam setup?

No that will only add to the Cost of the build . I am not real disappointed about this engine not having the Full Roller Camshaft . But I am disappointed to see it have 2-Bolt Main Caps being a Truck Engine ? But I can remember them 5.7 TPI Camaros and Firebirds being the same with 2-bolt main 5.7's . I still Like the older Gen 1 350's much Better .

I have a set of Ported #882 Heads that I took of a 1969 Impala Race Car confused.gif Yes biggrin I did not Port them no But they have to be over 170cc intake runners . I am going to use them as is after I rinse them off .

I did a Bit more disassemble work on the 5.7 Today

Like most Engines with Stock Type Timing sets . You can skip rope with the slack in the chain after 100K Miles

If you get a Roller Block that's drilled and tapped Like this one . You can buy this Kit that come with the Lifters and convert it to a Roller Camshaft Build . Yes you have to buy the Roller Cam as well more $$$

when i worked at s&S coring engines alot of those late 80's early 90's one piece rear main blocks were not roller but had the roller provisions? it was a 50/50 chance. the "vortech" motors were roller though.

them are ok heads? the vortech's

if i remember right there is a 638 2 bolt and a 638 4 bolt blocks in both flat tappet and roller haha. i do remember the main group of casting numbers for late model sbc one piece and roller's we had maybe a thousand motors total laying aorund? it was an engine reman shop selling crate motors. knda of like jasper engines? but on a smaller scale

Last night I did some changes to a set of 1971 #487 74cc 350 heads that I might use on this 5.7 Build . I have to say for stock castings they have nice size ports . I am going to use a Lot of Left over parts to slap this one together . It will be an interesting engine with parts that go against the grain of the Normal SB Chevy Builds .

Well seeing how some of my ( Friends ) out there in Internet Land keep asking me to build a Roller SB Chevy . Today I went out in the Cold and Snow and picked up a 1997 5.7 Vortec Long Block . The Vortec Block in no good but I can use all the Roller Hardware now for My 5.7 Truck Engine . I could not get My Engine Lift out My Garage . So I pushed that Short Block into a Big Snow Hill biggrin COOL

You plan on building anything special with the Vortecs? I just got done with a daily driver '87 Silverado. I used a 350 roller block bored .030, flat top pistons, vortec heads, RPM intake, and a Lunati Voodoo hydraulic roller cam. (60122) All backed by a th350 with 2500 stall and 3.42 gears. Turned out pretty powerful. Working on the carburetor now shooting for around 18 mpg using a Holley 650 dp.

I am going to strip them Vortec Heads down and have them checked out for cracks . Then Port out the Exhaust Sides and run High Flowing S/S Valves cut down the seal Bosses and replace the Springs . I have a 355 I want to use them on .

as For the Parts List of this 5.7 Roller Build . I did not make one up yet . I do know what Roller Camshaft I am going to run . Might be fun to just show Photos of this Engine Build then check out the run Video Ha-smile

It's going to take some Time to Build it . Because My 327 is next in Line .
