My 1979 350 Build
Permalink Closed

This is a 1979 SB Chevy 350 4 Bolt Main that I bought for $350 from my Local Craigs List . It's a Low mile engine under 70K id# TBC casting# 14016379 . The heads that where on it stock are the bad casting #624s used 75-86 . Well I wanted to do a budget street build with this engine say 320-330 HP . First I test ran this engine . It sounded good . And it was very clean inside . So I only changed the heads camshaft valve train . I had a set of #186 64cc Fuelly heads . But after they were check cracks were found  cry So I found a set of 1990 083 heads for $100 . The 083 heads are iron L-98 5.7 Z-28 T/A TPI heads and have 64cc chambers . So I  used them on this 1979 short block with it's dished pistons . With 0.15" head gaskets I should be at about 9.25.1 C/R . Now the 1987 and newer head take the self-aligning rockers . The 083 heads I bought from a guy that took them off a Low mile Third GEN T/A . So there clean and have the rockers . Also the two center intake bolts on the 1987 and newer heads are at a 72-deg angle instead of the early SBs that were 90-deg . Yes they make carb intakes that are drilled at this 72-deg angel . Or you could elongate the center holes on an early intake and use grade 8 washers . This will work but It's better to pick up the right intake with the 72-deg angel . Now for a camshaft I wanted good Torque and I am pushing for 330 HP . But This engine will have a Max of 9.25.1 C/R . And I may run this engine in my 1989 Chevy Short Bed Pick Up Truck . Also I was Looking for a Good Budget camshaft kit . So the camshaft kit that I bought was the Elgin kit #E922K from www.competitionproducts.com This camshaft is a dual-patterned type . This type of camshaft will help in the Low end Torque and the high RPM HP working with the Lower C/R . This camshaft is 214/224 dur at .050 and 443/465 Lift and has a 112 L/S . The camshaft kit comes with HD Z-28 / LT-1 valve springs that are good up to 510 Lift / umbrella seals / heat treated Locks / Performance Lifters and Lube for $129.95 . I have used these Kits before and the parts are Quality .

who ever did the valve Job on these #083 TPI Heads Never installed the Intake stem seals all the way Down . Also had a few knurled guides . The valve spring where also very weak . I cleaned up the castings and valves . The Guides are Ok even the Knurled one For Now . I installed a set of Z/28 Valve Springs . They Call them that because they are Specked out Like the DZ 302 Z/28 Springs . Good for 500 Lift . And a set of Chrome Moly Retainers . And Heat Treated Locks . Cleaned them up and Build them  smile

Here I installed the Performance Camshaft and Lifters I pump them up with oil before installing them . Many Engine Builder do not . But this is a more Mild Street Engine . I can Get a better adjustment Like this . Also used Heat Treated Push rods . You adjust the Valves Like this . TDC #1 do intake #1-2-5-7 Exhaust #1-3-4-8 Now turn the engine 180deg to TDC #6 do intake #6-3-4-8 Exhaust #6-2-5-7 . Tighten down the Rocker arm adjusting Nut as you are turn the Push rod around with two fingers . When you First feel Drag Stop that is 0 . Now turn it Down one more 1/2 Turn . Buy Doing this you set the Hyd Lifters plunger at it half way Point . If the Lifter is To loose you can break the top snap ring . On some race engines They are set to 1/4 Down after 0 this can give a Little more RPM on some Builds . Stock they are set 3/4 to Full turn Down after 0 . Now I have a Long Block COOL smile

I installed an early Edelbrock #2101 Performer Intake . This intake had to be made to work for the TPI 5.7 Heads . The Late Model Heads made from 1987 to Vortec have the 4 intake center bolts on a 72-degree angle instead of the 90-degree Found on the 1986 and Older Heads . It is not as Easy to Fit Like you may Think . But It did Turn out Well smile You can Buy intakes that are made for this swap . But they Cost $175.00 Bucks and I had this intake sitting around for about 10 Years . I Could not Beat the Price biggrinsmile

I picked up the Center Bolt Valve Covers From my Local Junk Yard $20 Bucks with the Bolts . The Q-Jet carb was off a 454 Chevy Tow Truck . I did a Few Mod's to it . The HEI is curved out and has a H.V coil installed . I used Shorty Tight Tuck Headers so I could run it on my Test Stand .

Check out this Water Pump it's an Auto Zone New Duralast #CWP-520HD . This Pump is a HD Pump with Roller Bearings , Ceramic Seal and redesigned Impeller that Delivers an increased Coolant output . On Line Price was $54.99 with out shipping . This Time I was Lucky . I bought it at my Local store for $33.97 + IL State 9% Total $37.03 . Not Bad Look like a Well made Part . When installing a Water Pump . Make sure you Use Some Type of Sealant on the Bolt Threads that go into the water Passages . If you do Not Coolant can Leak Pass the Threads and you will have a Leak .
